I don’t normally write reviews of subscription boxes – they’ve been done a hundred times over by people that can write much more exciting reviews than I could ever muster. However, today I feel the need to write a review of My Geek Box as a word of warning to other people that might be thinking their subscription service is a good idea. It isn’t.
I’ve had 4 boxes from My Geek Box. The first was a one off to see what it was like – it wasn’t that impressive – a quirky retro Zombie Tee that I like, but nothing else to write home about (in fact, I actually can’t remember what was in it, such was the level of tat.)
So, I had a break for a while, watched a couple of unboxing videos, decided that My Geek Box looked as though they had upped their game and signed up for a 3 month subscription.
Mistake No 1
a three month subscription is not a subscription for just three months, it’s a rolling subscription where they take a chunk of money out of your account every three months.
Mistake No 2
the contents of the boxes really haven’t improved. Out of the 4 boxes I’ve had, I’ve a 25% hit rate on the t shirts. Although the one I like, is serving as a pajama top, the other 3 are in my fabric box to be recycled in to something more usable. Other notable paraphernalia:
- an adventure time inflatable sword that my 4 year old loves, and doesn’t injure the dog with,
- a transformers mug (purely for it’s resale value/ stocking fillers for nephews)
- and a Simpsons donut – which I do actually like (it’s a handy desk pillow when you’re banging your head writing emails to companies that can’t be arsed to respond.)
Mistake No 3
I had a light bulb moment after the 3rd box arrived, and contacted them via their online form to say I wished to cancel. Their online form states they will respond within 48 hrs. No response. Nothing.
I then receive an email from them to say they have taken payment for another three month subscription. To which I respond, you must be mistaken, I have cancelled this subscription. No response. Nothing.
I have now contacted them a third time – waiting to see if I have a response within 48hrs. Currently it’s looking like I’m going to have to go the legal route to get my money back. Watch this space….
If you’re still thinking you’d really like a geeky subscription box
treat yourself to a Marvel Collector Corp box – more expensive, but it’s totally worth it and as it ships every other month, it works out around the same spend annually (only you’ll actually have something of value either to keep or sell on.)
