My Geek Box Review

September 1, 2015 at 8:19 pm  •  Posted in Other Geekery by  •  28 Comments

I don’t normally write reviews of subscription boxes – they’ve been done a hundred times over by people that can write much more exciting reviews than I could ever muster. However, today I feel the need to write a review of My Geek Box as a word of warning to other people that might be thinking their subscription service is a good idea. It isn’t.

I’ve had 4 boxes from My Geek Box. The first was a one off to see what it was like – it wasn’t that impressive – a quirky retro Zombie Tee that I like, but nothing else to write home about (in fact, I actually can’t remember what was in it, such was the level of tat.)

So, I had a break for a while, watched a couple of unboxing videos, decided that My Geek Box looked as though they had upped their game and signed up for a 3 month subscription.

Mistake No 1

a three month subscription is not a subscription for just three months, it’s a rolling subscription where they take a chunk of money out of your account every three months.

Mistake No 2

the contents of the boxes really haven’t improved. Out of the 4 boxes I’ve had, I’ve a 25% hit rate on the t shirts. Although the one I like, is serving as a pajama top, the other 3 are in my fabric box to be recycled in to something more usable. Other notable paraphernalia:

  • an adventure time inflatable sword that my 4 year old loves, and doesn’t injure the dog with,
  • a transformers mug (purely for it’s resale value/ stocking fillers for nephews)
  • and a Simpsons donut – which I do actually like (it’s a handy desk pillow when you’re banging your head writing emails to companies that can’t be arsed to respond.)

Mistake No 3

I had a light bulb moment after the 3rd box arrived, and contacted them via their online form to say I wished to cancel. Their online form states they will respond within 48 hrs. No response. Nothing.

I then receive an email from them to say they have taken payment for another three month subscription. To which I respond, you must be mistaken, I have cancelled this subscription. No response. Nothing.

I have now contacted them a third time – waiting to see if I have a response within 48hrs. Currently it’s looking like I’m going to have to go the legal route to get my money back. Watch this space….

If you’re still thinking you’d really like a geeky subscription box

treat yourself to a Marvel Collector Corp box – more expensive, but it’s totally worth it and as it ships every other month, it works out around the same spend annually (only you’ll actually have something of value either to keep or sell on.)

I highly recommend never ordering goodies from My Geek Box . I was so excited to receive my order (which took its time to arrive) but was utterly disappointed at the pile of rubbish received… not even remotely what they advertised. I ordered 1 box for a gift and some for myself but was too embarrassed to give the stuff as gifts and don’t wish to keep any of it for myself.

They won’t even refund me now after saying they would initially. Awful customer service with a different ‘person’ replying each time. Seems to be mostly generic copy and paste replies that they throw out to keep up with the abundance of negative feedback they receive. Most companies would try and make it up to an unhappy customer by sending them what they paid for or at the very least refunding them.

I’m generally very easily pleased and a product/service has to be very bad for me to go out of my way to give bad reviews… I will gladly seek any way I can to give this lot a bad review though. And by the looks of this review page I am far from alone.

Some similar companies out there who I gather send you what they advertise so go for them rather than these guys.

Not much more to add other than avoid, avoid, avoid. I purchased a one off box as a present, to subsequently find further payments from my account. Same stories about cancelling, so much effort and appalling customer service when it could be resolved so much more efficiently and with more goodwill towards me, the paying customer.

Sorry to hear you’ve also had problems with this company – hard to believe they’re still able to get away with such atrocious service :/

Shame I didn’t see this before ordering!
Thought it’d be a nice gift for my boyfriend. I got an offer where I bought a box and got a free past box with it – ideal! Ordered mens medium…’mystery’ past box came as womens small t-shirt! Don’t think my 6ft boyfriend will quite fit in it! Also from watching unboxing videos it’s also missing an item!
Contacted customer service – they told me it’s random and they can’t guarantee what you will receive. Well it’s not random if I requested mens medium is it! Have not yet received this months box, but mystery box was disappointment. Apparently the next one will come with something pokemon and something adventure time so might be better.
I also didn’t realise it was an ‘auto-renew’ subscription so immediately tried to cancel so i’ll see what they say about that. Ridiculous company – definitely do not recommend. Trying to pester them on twitter too!

I ordered a one off geekbox because they were giving away free pokemon headphones with a code. I got a little concern after seeing a complaint on their facebook today. and asked about my order. my response back from them was that the box’s are dispatch between 15-20th of each month. but the headphones aren’t going to be sent out to November which is slightly worrying. more so after reading all these comments on here.

It’s still early days yet but I have this gut feeling I might not be getting any pokemon headphones. if I even get a box. leaving it to November is leaving it to late just in case they don’t turn up. would it be worth trying to get a refund before hand? you think… knowing how they operate? any advice would be great.

Wish I’d read all these before I signed up. I say “signed up”. I thought I was buying a one off box (because they have an offer of 1 month sign up). I contacted them to ask if it was a subscription service and they acknowledged it was but told me I couldn’t cancel until my first box was dispatched. It then took them 8 weeks to dispatch the first box – during which time they had charged for and dispatched THE SECOND BOX. They did this knowing full well I didn’t want the subscription. It took 8 weeks for ANYTHING to turn up.

They then tried to tell me that I wasn’t able to return either boxes because I had opened the external packaging so the box wasn’t in “pristine” condition. Ironic since I had only opened the box in order to put their returns authorization form inside. How else do you return the items? Thankfully I got my bank involved early on and they stopped future payments and reimbursed me while they fight it.

Word of advice for anyone fighting Geek Box – contact them through their facebook page. You don’t always get the response you want but at least it is an actual human being and not the templated pseudo-response you get from their online form.

Had a terrible experience with them. Got sent a damaged item. Sent several messages asking for a replacement, all the did was send me the same responses (well after 48 hours). Had to get PayPal involved and still waiting for judgement. Luckily I was going to subscribe to them but after this experience I would say to anyone “STAY AWAY AND GO WITH LOOTCRATE!!!!!”

I’m having a nightmare tryin to cancel my subscription that I never signed up for,
Does anyone have an actual real email address for them?
I have also contacted my bank!

I too am having major issues with Geekbox, they are a bunch of clowns falsely taking money.

  9. Plainjayne81 / June 8, 2016 at 3:23 pm / Reply

What utter rubbish zbox and geek box is! It should be marketed towards 5 year olds and not adults.
It is also worth noting that you should never buy a geek box and a zbox, they are exactly the same.
    Customer service is atrocious.
The contents are pure tat, absolute junk, stuff you’d happily put in the bin and never miss. You’d probably put the stuff in a drawer though and every time you opened the drawer you’d be so angry you spent money on this shit.
Don’t be tempted by the photographs, they are many boxes put together, in 3 boxes I’ve not received anything of interest or value, the shirts are terrible quality and there’s been no pop vinyls etc.
    I’ve totally been duped.

I am having trouble with the geek box order. I ordered on the 21st of April and still have not recieved mine. They told me it would be dispatched soon. Even though it stated it was a one off £10 box they have set me up for a £17.99 subscription. On attempting to cancel they inform me i have to wait until my box is dispatched. And now due to it being too late to cancel my order they are set to take the £17.99 out of my account. I have a horrible feeling this is a start to a never ending cycle.

    • Aeryn Sun / May 24, 2016 at 4:11 pm / Reply

Hi Rebekah – contact your bank and nip it in the bud. Explain what has happened, and they should be able to stop the subscription payment or at least get it refunded if it has gone out plus your £10 for goods not received. This seems to be the most effective method of dealing with this awful company.
      Good luck!

Not really about a box but i ordered a xmas jumper that never came 8 weeks ago and still no refund. Shocking service. Hard to get in contact with. Micky mouse company

  12. Doomy / January 21, 2016 at 10:51 am / Reply

They have just charged me for another month, even though my sub was cancelled. I will contact my credit card company; as their customer services appear unwilling or unable to correct, what I suspect is their deliberate mistake, judging by these previous complaints.

    • Chrissy / February 18, 2016 at 1:26 pm / Reply

I got charged for this months box too! Despite having cancelled. The issue with taking it up with my bank is if Geek Box tries to claim it was an authorised payment, they keep my money.
I don’t really know how to go about challenging that.

Where do I begin….what an AWFUL Customer Service experience I have had with them. It’s horrendous having to communicate through online messaging!

I spent £35 on 2 Boxes back in November and having chased up my order several times, I finally lost the plot by the 6th week and still no sign of my boxes or Free Welcome Box. By this time they’d taken December’s Payment – and by then had £70 of my money.

They EVENTUALLY refunded my November payment as their had been an ‘issue with their stock’….Following numerous, Unhelpful responses from their Customer Support Team and the experience I was receiving from them, that I requested they cancel my December’s order and refund me the payment (£35)….However, they then said it wasn’t possible to receive a refund (even though I pointed out under Consumer Law I could request a refund on non-receipt of goods upto and including the time I actually received the items (& for a further 14 days following receipt).

They informed me they couldn’t cancel my order because the items had been despatched….which at the point of my communication I believe to be a lie as it took at least 7 days to actually receive my item….YES ITEM…..They had failed to send the 2 Boxes I paid for and when I challenged this; they said they’d look into it and later followed up a further email a week later to request where my item was and have since had no response! I returned the 1 Box I had because the items were actually as Christmas Gifts and TBH I wanted nothing more to do with them and their shoddy service!

I’ve yet to A) receive a refund for my returned item and B) received the kids box I paid for…and I have sent a letter of complaint back in December and have had NO RESPONSE!

Last night having looked online for advice, it was suggested I try and obtain monies from my bank which I did and my Bank couldn’t have been anymore helpful and have refunded me my £35 (which I add was done in less than 12 hours!) And will now seek monies from the Company.

I’m glad to have FINALLY got all my money back . However I should seek compensation for the appalling service and the level of stress they caused me in dealing with them.

Well done on getting your money back – getting your bank involved was a good call, I’d not have thought of that!

Truly the WORST customer service I’ve ever experienced. Still waiting for a refund on a returned box a month later. The boxes are awful, truly truly terrible. They clearly don’t communicate with each other in the customer service team either, I’ve had the same conversation with about 4 different staff members. It’s infuriating. Seems that there’s absolutely no good feedback for them out there at all. If you search for them on twitter, all the tweets are people moaning at them. It’s taught me to do my research when signing up to any other box companies that’s for sure

I agree wholeheartedly about mygeekbox. I sincerely wish I’d read reviews before using them. I have truly never had a worse online shopping experience. I ordered two children’s Star Wars Christmas jumpers on 30 November (one for 5-6 yo, other for 9yo). I received the 5-6 yo one in mid-Dec but it fits me (size 12 woman) and today I received a huge men’s storm trooper t-shirt. I assume that’s meant to be the 9yo Star Wars Christmas jumper. When I have emailed to:
    1. Cancel the whole order when they couldn’t deliver within the SLA
    2. Cancel part 2 of the order because it was too late and ask how to refund the bit they did send
the responses would indicate that they didn’t read my emails at all, having done nothing that I asked.
I’ve again emailed to ask how I can get a refund for these blatantly incorrect items, but I’m pretty convinced they won’t even do that right.
Why didn’t I just use Amazon?

    This company are a joke.
It’s over a month that I paid my first subscription, and still received nothing. They even had the guile to attempt to take a second payment from me, before I’ve even received anything from the first.
I can’t review their goods as I’ve yet to receive anything to review 33 days after payment. Don’t expect any help from customer services too. Just generic, useless information is dished out from them.

    • Katie / July 3, 2016 at 2:27 pm / Reply

I’m in exactly the same boat!
They took a payment and sent me nothing. Then told me that the free box I also ordered was out of stock. Then tried to take another payment a month later!
The customer service team is the worst I’ve ever spoken to and I constantly get the same answer (word for word exactly the same) even though my questions were different. Awful company

I ordered my 3 month package on the 18th November 2015. I got an email 2 weeks later saying that they are still waiting for a dispatch date, now I get a email saying they are cancelling my order all together as they have messed up ONLY A MONTH LATER AND NO OTHER CoNTACT… So the birthday present for my bro is now gone and over a month late.. Nice one geekbox. No sorry or anything from them.

  18. Crissie / December 11, 2015 at 4:58 pm / Reply

I’ve had similar issues. Not only with cancelling but with the fact that it took 9 weeks for one box to arrive and the customer service was absolutely terrible!

    • Aeryn Sun / December 12, 2015 at 4:58 am / Reply

It amazes me that they’re owned by a massive company and able to get away with such appalling service!

    • Luke / December 15, 2015 at 4:30 pm / Reply

It has taken a month for them to finally email me back saying they are cancelling my order as they messed up my order. so iv paid £56.00 and waited a month for nothing but crap customer service WHY IS THERE NOT A CONTACT NUMBER!

  19. Aeryn Sun / December 2, 2015 at 9:12 pm / Reply

Hey Martin, thanks for commenting. I finally got a full refund by pestering them on Twitter. I found a couple of other people having the same problem at the same time and had a very public convo about how bad they were. Finally got contacted by my geek box in a couple of days via Twitter and a refund within a week.

This might work for you – good luck!

  20. Graham / December 2, 2015 at 9:11 pm / Reply

Same thing with me, they have just now taken yet another payment despite numerous complaints and messages. Oh they also store your payment information off site so they can reinstate payments if you remove the payment information.

  21. Martin g / December 2, 2015 at 8:51 pm / Reply

I’ve had the same problem, I cancelled my monthly subscription the day I received the 3rd box and still they take payment from my account.
They got my tee size completely wrong (i asked for xl I got xxxl), the second box I got included items that are available for free and I know I shouldn’t complain about the free box but it was terrible beyond belief.

To anyone considering using mygeekbox, don’t, just don’t.
Spend that money on anything but them.
